Gam3 Jam - Inaugural edition
Back again with game jam #2!
Maybe it's because I used to aspire to be a teacher, but my game jam entries tend to be on the educational side. This one was definitely necessary as the 'Challenge' for the inaugural Gam3 Jam was:
In the pursuit of knowledge, your submission must impart some form of
learning to the player—any subject matter is fair game. During
submission, you will be required to specify the educational element your
game conveys.
Since education is my jam (see what I did there?), I
of course went with something educational again. Though it took me a bit to
figure out the concept, I feel like I went directly to math for the subject.
Once the THEME came out, I had to think more on it. The theme was
Learn From Failure.
I settled on algebra in the end with the Learn from Failure being expressed by
an explanation of how to solve the algebra problem if someone were to get the
question wrong. The character approaches a blinking box and when he encounters
it, a window pops up with a basic algebra problem. On successfully answering
three questions, the bridge drops down and the player can move forward.
The end result has much to fix but is something I will be expanding on and improving. The community ratings for 'enjoyable' reminded me not to mix math with fun. lol
Some may wonder why I plan on continuing development if people did not enjoy it. Well, that goes back to my education training. I want to make education fun. I'm tired of AI this and AI that and 'I can get my answer from this bot5'. I want to gamify the algebra so that people learn how to solve the problems, not just get the answer from a computer.
Another reason for my continuing this project is that I have a niece with
dyscalculia who is starting to learn algebra. I want to support her however I
can from hundreds of miles away, and if a game can help her, I'll do
it.
